Metallica-biler på museum

Hvor ofte har James Hetfield og Metallica brukt biler som tema i musikken sin? En gang kanskje? På Fuel* – en singel fra 1997. På tross av at Hetfield er en av de mest perfeksjonistiske samlere av biler. En kommende utstilling trekker frem ni av hans custom-bygg.

Det er Petersen Automotive Museum i Los Angeles som ikke bare skal åpne en utstilling av disse bilene til uken.

Metallicas frontmann, James Hetfield, har donert alle bilene til museet slik at de blir en del av den permanente samlingen der.

Det er ikke ukjent at Hetfield har vært entusiast hele sitt liv, og med Metallicas økende popularitet fra de startet i 1981 har han kunnet øke sin samling.

Den inneholder alle de obligatoriske greiene, med Ferrarier og Miura og slikt – en samling som er i stadig endring. Men det er de spesialbygde custom-bilene som er kjernen i entusiast-virksomheten.

Han får bygget biler, ofte etter eget hode, han kjøper biler andre har skapt, og det er heller ikke ukjent at han tar en fastnøkkel eller en skjærebrenner og deltar i arbeidet selv.

«Reclaimed Rust» heter utstillingen – hvilket vel ikke er helt sant. Disse bilene er ikke akkurat hentet tilbake fra en rusten tilstand, men de hadde selvfølgelig rustet hvis ingen hadde tatt seg av dem.

Og Hetfield tar seg av dem. Han kjører dem, han endrer dem, han deltar på treff (det er vel ikke SÅ lenge siden Slow Burn fikk en Best in Show, og han går ut og inn av verkstedene til folk som Rick Dore (favorittbyggeren hans) og Darryll Hollenbeck.

Et par ord om noen av de bilene som skal vises – og som senere skal samles i en bok (som skal gis ut på prestisjeforlaget Simon & Schuster – de samme som ga ut Metallica-boken, Back to Front).

Aquarius er blant mine favoritter. Dette er fransk 30-talls flamboyance tatt til det ekstreme men med innslag av 40- og 50-talls California. Du så aldri siderør som et dekorativt innslag på et Figoni og Falaschi-karosseri. Bilen er løst basert på en 1934 Packard.

Black Pearl påstår at den er en Jaguar, men det eneste Jag her er en 1948 periferi-ramme. Resten er klassisk amerikansk custom helt til Ford V-åtteren under panseret.

Men designen kunne igjen vært vintage fransk – profilen fra en Bugatti og gull-elementene som erstatter krom er jo en typisk prikk over en i.

Slow Burn har jeg også masse sans for. Auburn-basert, 1936 – en bil Hetfield faktisk fant på eBay, men har jobbet mye med i etterkant.

Og masse applaus til Skyscraper som er en slags ironisk utgave av en 1953 Buick Skylark og str8edge der ingen er i tvil om at det ligger en Ford F-100 bak det hele. I dette tilfelle en 1956-modell.

Og da låter det kanskje rart at jeg ikke skjønner noe av hans Custom 1961 Lincoln Continental. Kanskje jeg ikke syns den er tatt langt nok?

Men alt i alt ser det ut som en god presentasjon av hvilke bra ting Heavy Metal faktisk kan føre til.

PS: Det er noen her som påstår at St. Anger – gruppas åttende studioalbum – inneholder referanser til biler. Aner ikke, jeg har aldri orket å høre gjennom det. Dessuten var det noen som fikk meg til å tro at det var Pushwagner som hadde gjort coveret. Feil-lest, viste det seg, fyren het Pushead.
